Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) criticized Todd Blanche’s nomination for attorney general, claiming that Republicans have neglected their oversight responsibilities and allowed Donald Trump to benefit from his presidency without accountability. Booker expressed concern that lawmakers failed to scrutinize Trump while advancing Blanche, who previously served as Trump's personal defense attorney, for the role of the nation's top law enforcement official.
Booker's remarks followed the Senate Judiciary Committee's approval of Blanche’s nomination, which passed with a 12-10 vote along party lines. He stated, "To me it is ridiculous, the corruption that we have normalized in America," and highlighted the disparity in focus on the financial dealings of the Biden family compared to those of the Trump family.
He further criticized the lack of integrity in government, stating, "Why have people on both sides of the aisle given up on any trust in government? It’s because we are surrendering any shred of integrity left." Booker expressed disappointment that the committee did not impose checks on the administration before moving Blanche’s nomination forward, adding that he had hoped for measures to prevent what he described as the actions of "the world’s greatest presidential tax cheat."
