Trump Administration Reports Results of Immigration Crackdown in Trucking Industry

The Trump administration announced the results of a crackdown on illegal immigration within the trucking industry on August 4, 2026. The Department of Transportation (DOT) initiated Operation Highway Shield in Florida earlier this year and has since expanded the operation to several Midwestern states, including Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Ohio. During the operation, officials conducted 3,487 enforcement stops, resulting in 766 unsafe commercial vehicles or drivers being placed out of service, 51 immigration detentions, 47 criminal charges, 39 incarcerations, and 36 violations of English language proficiency. Additionally, three cargo theft recoveries were made, totaling approximately $1 million in stolen freight. The administration emphasizes that federal immigration and commercial driving enforcement remains a priority. Concerns have been raised about the ability of some truck drivers to meet English proficiency requirements, which are considered critical for safety on the roads.
