DOJ to Monitor Polling Sites in Four Michigan Cities

The U.S. Department of Justice announced on August 4, 2026, that it is monitoring polling sites in Detroit, Lansing, East Lansing, and Hamtramck during the primary election. The department informed these cities in late June about its intention to place election monitors at certain locations. Staff from the Civil Rights Division's Voting Section and U.S. Attorney's Offices in Michigan have been assigned to this task. Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon stated that the DOJ aims to ensure free and fair elections nationwide and appreciates the cooperation of local jurisdictions. Detroit City Clerk Janice Winfrey confirmed the presence of federal election monitors and expressed confidence in the election process. Rev. Dr. Wendell Anthony, president of the Detroit NAACP, noted that observers would be present to ensure voter security.
