Kansas mother recovering after suspected spider bite leads to complications

A Kansas mother of four is recovering after a suspected spider bite resulted in surgery and serious infections, leading to a weeks-long hospital stay. Britagne Miller from Goddard reported that she was bitten while sitting around a campfire at Cheney Lake on May 28. Four days later, she sought medical attention due to swelling and pain around the bite on her calf. Miller was admitted to Wesley Hospital in Wichita on June 4, where she underwent surgery. Her treatment was complicated by existing blood-clotting disorders and liver problems. Doctors later diagnosed her with end-stage liver failure, and her family was warned that her condition could be fatal. Miller chose to continue treatment rather than enter hospice care and has limited memories of her time in intensive care. She was released from the hospital on July 11 and is now continuing her recovery at home, requiring home health care, physical therapy, and regular specialist visits. She hopes to receive a liver transplant but is not yet eligible for the transplant list. The specific type of spider that bit her has not been confirmed, although experts note that the brown recluse and black widow are common in Kansas. Dr. Raymond Cloyd from Kansas State University advised caution regarding spiders and suggested sealing cracks and being careful with undisturbed items.
