He defeated Hartzell Gray, a democratic socialist and former Kansas City radio host, in a seven-way primary. Herrera's victory positions him to face Republican Rep. Mark Alford in the November election in a district that leans Republican.
Gray, who had gained attention for his progressive platform and refusal to accept corporate donations, raised approximately $250,000 for his campaign, significantly more than Herrera's $40,000. The Kansas City chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America endorsed Gray, marking their first federal endorsement. His campaign focused on issues such as universal health care, tenant protections, and progressive taxation.
Despite Gray's financial advantage and support from the Democratic Socialists, the general election will challenge whether his coalition can succeed in a district designed to favor Republican candidates. The primary included several other candidates, including former Democratic nominee Jeanette Cass and radio host Randy Miller.
