New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is under scrutiny regarding his relationship with Uncivilized Media, a Qatar-based outlet accused of promoting antisemitic conspiracy theories. In 2023, Mamdani participated in an interview with the outlet, and as of July 24, 2026, he was following its Instagram account, though he later unfollowed it by July 27, 2026. Clips from the interview were shared on both his and the outlet's Instagram accounts.
The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has stated that Uncivilized Media has produced content that perpetuates antisemitic tropes, including claims about Jews and Israelis seeking global domination. Oren Segal, the ADL's senior vice president, noted that while Mamdani's interviews did not focus on these conspiracies, some Jewish New Yorkers are questioning how his views align with those of the outlet.
In his interview, Mamdani emphasized the importance of the Palestinian issue to his identity, describing it as a struggle for freedom. He expressed that his background influences his understanding of the Palestinian struggle, framing it in terms of empathy and solidarity. He also identified himself as a socialist and discussed the relationship between progressive views and Muslim beliefs.
Concerns have been raised by some Jewish New Yorkers about their community's relationship with the mayor's office, with suggestions that Mamdani could alleviate these concerns by publicly denouncing the antisemitic content produced by Uncivilized Media. The scrutiny of Mamdani intensified following his recent comments labeling Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a 'war criminal.' Neither Mamdani's office nor Uncivilized Media has responded to requests for comment.
