Laura Loomer, a right-wing influencer, announced on social media her desire to become the next Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), aiming to replace Markwayne Mullin. In her post, Loomer stated, "I would like to be the new DHS Secretary," and emphasized her intention to enhance the role of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in immigration enforcement. She tagged President Donald Trump in her post, although it is unclear if they have discussed her interest in the position.
Loomer's announcement follows a record number of arrests by ICE in July, totaling approximately 51,000, the highest monthly figure in DHS history. The agency has increased its immigration operations at airports, resulting in over 30 arrests last month.
Despite the surge in arrests, the number of deportations has remained consistent compared to previous years. Mullin has indicated plans to increase deportations in 2026, but current data suggests little change in the deportation rate since the tenure of former Secretary Kristi Noem.
Critics of Mullin, including figures associated with the Make America Great Again movement, have expressed dissatisfaction with his approach to immigration reform, advocating for a focus on mass deportations. Loomer has previously called for Mullin's removal, citing his lack of action on deportations.
Loomer has been a prominent supporter of Trump and has made headlines for her controversial views, including conspiracy theories regarding major national events. Recently, she also shifted her stance on the conflict in Ukraine after a visit to the country, indicating a change in her perspective on the war with Russia.
