Seventy individuals were arrested in Mississippi during a two-week operation aimed at addressing child exploitation and targeting previously convicted sex offenders. This operation, named Operation Muddy Waters, involved multiple federal, state, and local agencies and resulted in new charges related to child exploitation, including cases involving illegal immigrants.
Among those arrested were Cristian Abel Argueta Giron, an illegal immigrant from Honduras, who allegedly traveled from Tennessee to Mississippi to engage in sexual conduct with a minor; Rahul Mondal, an illegal immigrant from Bangladesh on a student visa, accused of communicating with a 14-year-old male; and Jose Arevalo Garcia, an illegal immigrant from Mexico, identified as a non-compliant sex offender.
Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch stated that one child was rescued from a sextortion scheme during the operation. Fitch emphasized the importance of the collaboration among law enforcement agencies in addressing these crimes. Matthew Reidell, assistant special agent in charge of HSI Gulfport, highlighted the ongoing commitment to protecting children and holding offenders accountable.
