Sen. Gary Peters expresses confidence in Abdul El-Sayed's Senate candidacy despite prior endorsement of rival

Senator Gary Peters, a Democrat from Michigan, expressed confidence that Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed will defeat Republican nominee Mike Rogers in the upcoming Senate race, despite having endorsed El-Sayed's primary rival, Representative Haley Stevens. El-Sayed, recognized as a progressive candidate, will compete against Rogers in the midterm elections. Peters stated that the differences between El-Sayed and Rogers regarding issues affecting families in Michigan are significant. He noted that El-Sayed's victory in the primaries represents a trend among left-wing Democrats challenging the current Democratic establishment. The primary race saw over $80 million in spending, making it the most expensive Democratic Senate nomination race in history. While Republicans have suggested that the nomination of progressive candidates indicates a weakening of the Democratic establishment, Peters argued that the results do not reflect the entire party. El-Sayed, a former Wayne County Health Department director, has called for defunding the police and ICE and is a critic of Israel's actions towards Palestinians. The Senate race is scheduled for November 3.
