Currently, Spokane, Washington, is experiencing a historic wildfire that has destroyed neighborhoods and remains uncontrolled, alongside fires in regions such as Bordeaux, France, and British Columbia.
Climate scientist Daniel Swain noted that there has not been a year in the past decade without at least one catastrophic fire event. Past catastrophic fires have impacted communities in Fort McMurray, Alberta; Santa Rosa, California; and Paradise, California, among others.
While climate change does not directly cause wildfires, it contributes to hotter weather and drier vegetation, which can lead to larger and more intense fires. Additionally, population growth in fire-prone areas increases exposure to these risks. Factors such as high winds and lightning can ignite devastating fires.
Firas Saleh, who directs wildfire models at Moody's, stated that while wildfires may appear random, they are often predictable from a risk perspective. Areas like Spokane, France, and Hawaii share characteristics such as rising temperatures and increased development in fire-prone landscapes.
Climate change is just one factor contributing to destructive fires, making it challenging to attribute specific events directly to it. Susan Prichard, a forest ecologist at the University of Washington, expressed concern that the scientific community may have misjudged the public's response to climate change as extreme weather events become more common.
Research from Yale University indicates that more Americans are recognizing the effects of climate change, but acknowledging it during a disaster is different from understanding it in a broader context. This disconnect leads to parallel discussions about immediate adaptation and long-term climate mitigation.
As the wildfire season continues, experts warn of the likelihood of more wildfires in the future.
