Merzel ejected Sale after he yelled at him as umpires took the field for the series finale. Sale has a history of rarely balking, with only two prior instances in his career. After the ejection, Braves manager Walt Weiss was also tossed from the game while attempting to intervene in the argument. Following Sale's ejection, the Braves won the game against the Yankees, 2-1, in extra innings.
