During the interview, presenter Rania Khalek characterized the subpoenas as an attack on free speech and independent journalism, suggesting that the investigation is politically motivated. The committee is examining whether nonprofit laws adequately protect against foreign influence and has alleged that Singham's network obscured the original source of its funding. BreakThrough News is one of three organizations under scrutiny, with the committee specifically investigating approximately $39 million in funding. Khalek argued that the subpoenas are a revival of McCarthy-era tactics and emphasized the need for public support against what she described as a smear campaign. The committee, however, stated that its inquiry focuses on the organization's financing arrangements and not its editorial positions.
