Taylor Farms, a major produce supplier in North America, is currently facing a food safety crisis linked to a salmonella outbreak that has affected multiple consumer brands in the U.S. The company is involved in FDA investigations concerning various pathogens that have resulted in illnesses for thousands of individuals.
The FDA reported on August 10, 2026, that it has tracked 345 cases of salmonella, including 36 hospitalizations, associated with jalapeños distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors. In response, Taylor Farms is recalling finished food products containing these jalapeños. As of the latest update, the company stated it was not aware of any reported illnesses related to its products and has ceased sourcing from Coast Citrus Distributors while seeking alternative suppliers.
This salmonella outbreak coincides with another food safety issue involving over 6,300 cases of cyclospora contamination linked to iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms to restaurants including Taco Bell. The recalls affect products sold at major retailers such as Kroger, Target, Trader Joe's, and Whole Foods.
Experts suggest that Taylor Farms may face pressure from its clients regarding these incidents. Brian Ronholm, director of food policy at Consumer Reports, indicated that food retailers and restaurants might consider reviewing their supplier arrangements to mitigate contamination risks. Jaydee Hanson, policy director at the Center for Food Safety, emphasized the need for Taylor Farms to conduct a thorough audit of its supply chain and enforce strict food safety measures.
In a statement, Taylor Farms noted its annual investment of over $200 million in food safety and highlighted its long-standing history as a supplier. The FDA's ability to manage food safety practices has been questioned, particularly following personnel cuts during the Trump administration, which may affect its response to outbreaks. However, a White House spokesperson stated that frontline FDA inspectors remain unaffected by workforce reductions and that the administration is committed to providing necessary resources to address recent outbreaks.
