Recount in Indiana State Senate Primary Puts Paula Copenhaver Ahead of Spencer Deery

A recount in the Indiana state Senate primary held in May has resulted in Republican Paula Copenhaver, who received support from former President Donald Trump, taking the lead over incumbent Spencer Deery. Deery was among seven GOP senators who faced primary challenges after voting against a congressional map proposed by Trump. Initially, Deery held a three-vote lead, which Copenhaver contested. The Indiana Recount Commission recently invalidated ten votes — eight for Deery and two for Copenhaver — giving Copenhaver a three-vote advantage. Deery announced on X that he plans to appeal the decision, claiming it undermines voter intent and sets a concerning precedent for future elections. Copenhaver, an aide to Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith, has not yet commented on the ruling. Should her lead hold through the appeal process, she is expected to be a strong candidate in the general election for the heavily Republican 23rd State Senate District, where she will face Democrat David Sanders and independent Joshua Brant. The new state Senate may also revisit redistricting before the 2028 elections. Senate President Rod Bray, who opposed the Trump-backed map, has announced he will not seek another term as Republican leader.
