A man wanted for the theft of an off-duty police officer's car in Philadelphia is also a person of interest in the murder of a Penn State University student, Billy Schmidt, who was killed in June. Schmidt, 22, was shot during an armed robbery attempt on June 6 at approximately 1:30 a.m. He was found with a gunshot wound to the chest and was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.
Police have identified 19-year-old Khadfi Fleming as a suspect in the car theft incident. Officers observed a red Lexus driving without headlights, followed by a dark SUV. Two males were seen running toward the Lexus before gunfire erupted. The suspects allegedly stole a green Dodge Charger belonging to the off-duty officer, who pursued them.
Fleming is also being investigated in connection with Schmidt's murder. Reports indicate that Schmidt was returning home after watching the NBA Finals with friends when he was robbed. Surveillance footage reportedly shows him demanding his phone back as he chased the suspects, followed by a gunshot.
Fleming's 16-year-old brother was taken into custody in Colorado in June, along with another teenager who turned himself in to authorities. Schmidt was a journalism student at Penn State World Campus and was expected to graduate in December.
