Mikie Sherrill Supports Voter ID Laws Following Removal of Noncitizens from Voter Rolls

Governor Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ) expressed support for voter ID laws in New Jersey after her administration removed 6,600 noncitizens from the state's voter rolls in July. This action followed what Sherrill described as a 'serious software error' that had occurred under her predecessor, former Governor Phil Murphy. In an interview with News 12, Sherrill stated, 'I would support that, I don’t have a problem with voter ID,' but opposed the SAVE America Act proposed by former President Donald Trump, which would require a government-issued photo ID for federal elections. Sherrill's spokesperson indicated that she is open to considering proposals for stronger voter ID laws to ensure fair elections. Currently, New Jersey requires voters to present a valid driver's license or state-issued ID or provide their Social Security number to register. The spokesperson also criticized efforts from 'MAGA Republicans' as attempts at voter suppression. Following the announcement about the removal of noncitizens, the White House highlighted the incident as a reason to support the SAVE America Act, urging Americans to join in the effort to secure federal elections.
