Two U.S. soldiers were killed on August 12, 2026, when an Army Apache attack helicopter crashed in a field near Fort Hood, Texas, leading to a wildfire that prompted evacuations of nearby homes. The AH-64 Apache was conducting a routine training flight when it crashed near Salado, approximately 50 miles north of Austin, shortly after 1:30 p.m. local time, according to the Bell County Sheriff’s Office.
Emergency responders received multiple 911 calls regarding the crash and a large fire. Upon arrival, deputies discovered the wreckage and an uncontrolled blaze. Bell County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Cliff Coleman described the crash as violent during a news conference.
The two soldiers on board were pronounced dead at the scene, with their identities withheld pending family notification. Brigadier General Ethan Diven, acting commanding general of the 1st Cavalry Division, expressed condolences to the families and friends of the deceased.
No injuries were reported on the ground, and no structures were damaged. The fire, which spread to approximately 155 acres, was about 85% contained by Wednesday evening, according to local reports. Emergency crews from various fire departments responded to the incident, and officials advised residents to avoid the area.
The AH-64E Apache is a two-seat Army attack helicopter utilized for armed reconnaissance, close combat, and mobile strikes. The Fort Hood Criminal Investigation Division is leading the investigation into the crash. Brigadier General Diven stated that securing the site and supporting initial response efforts are the immediate priorities. Texas Governor Greg Abbott also extended condolences to the families of the soldiers and the Fort Hood community.
