Ukraine's Troop Shortage Sparks Discussion on Women's Recruitment

Ukraine is experiencing a shortage of soldiers, which Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov acknowledged as a significant weakness in January. This shortage has led to discussions about potential solutions, including the recruitment of women and lowering the conscription age for men. Both proposals have faced considerable social resistance. Colonel Roman Kovalov noted that societal traditions view men as warriors and women as caretakers, making the idea of mobilizing women controversial. In April, some women received military summonses due to what the Ministry of Defense later described as computer errors, prompting speculation about covert mobilization. Journalist Andriana Kucher highlighted that female recruitment is more contentious than lowering the conscription age for men, with many viewing the army as a male domain. Kucher is considering joining the military under a new recruitment system that allows a 14-month service contract. Currently, women make up 7% of the Ukrainian army, with 5,000 in combat roles. Advocates for female recruitment, including drone commander Yana Zalevska, argue that the military needs to be feminized. Oksana Grigorieva, head of gender affairs in the Armed Forces, has supported reinstating compulsory service for both genders but acknowledged societal readiness for such a move is lacking. Activist Yulia Kobrinovich has called for women’s recruitment while emphasizing the need for separate units and lighter duties for women. Daria Dshk, a commander in the drone unit, agrees with some of Kobrinovich's points but believes improvements are being made in gender relations within the military.
