USDA Undersecretary Requested Increased Firefighting Resources Near Idaho Ranch

Michael Boren, the Undersecretary of Agriculture for Natural Resources and Environment, requested additional firefighting resources for a fire that broke out near his ranch in Idaho last month. Boren, who oversees the U.S. Forest Service, made multiple calls to operations centers asking for more aircraft to combat the fire, despite officials determining that such resources were unnecessary. This resulted in the deployment of nine aircraft at a cost of approximately $115,000 in federal funds. Current and former Forest Service officials noted that the response exceeded typical measures for a fire of that size. Boren, a co-founder of Clearwater Analytics, was confirmed to his position in October with a Senate vote of 51-47. He has previously expressed contentious interactions with the Forest Service, although he stated that they often lead to settlements. A spokesperson for the Agriculture Department defended Boren's actions, indicating that regular contact with agencies is expected, but some staff expressed concerns about the appropriateness of his influence on firefighting operations.
