Legal Expert Calls for Leadership Changes at Smithsonian Over Historical Portrayal

Cully Stimson, a senior legal fellow at the Heritage Foundation, has called for a leadership overhaul at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History (NMAH), claiming the museum presents a negative portrayal of American history. Stimson argues that the museum's narrative emphasizes an oppressor-versus-oppressed framework rather than a balanced view of historical events, including slavery and subsequent civil rights advancements. His comments follow a July 2026 White House report that accused the Smithsonian of promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) agendas, leading to congressional hearings that scrutinized the museum's leadership, particularly Director Anthea Hartig. Stimson criticized Hartig's handling of the hearings and suggested she should resign or be dismissed for her conduct. He expressed concern that the museum's exhibits focus excessively on controversial topics and do not adequately celebrate the nation's achievements. Stimson emphasized the importance of teaching history in a way that acknowledges both triumphs and challenges without fostering a sense of self-loathing. He believes a significant reevaluation of the museum's approach is necessary. The Smithsonian has not publicly responded to these criticisms.
