ICE Agents Conduct Surveillance on Minneapolis Activists Amid Protests

Organizers in Minneapolis suspected federal government surveillance during protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). A court filing revealed that the youth-led Sunrise Movement and other groups were subject to undercover operations, including attendance at meetings and protests, as well as subpoenas for financial records. The Sunrise Movement, which advocates for nonviolent protest, expressed concerns about government tactics aimed at intimidating activists. Executive Director Aru Shiney-Ajay stated that such actions are intended to deter public participation in protests. The court filing also indicated that undercover agents attempted to influence organizers towards more confrontational tactics. ICE's investigations, termed "Operation Puppet Master" and "Project Whipple Shield," were initiated following incidents involving federal agents. Despite the group's commitment to peaceful protest, undercover agents infiltrated their training sessions and activities. ICE has not provided a detailed explanation for the investigations, citing ongoing legal protocols. The revelations have sparked backlash from various advocacy groups, emphasizing the chilling effect of government surveillance on free speech and assembly.
