Gallagher's remarks were made during a news conference with Court Watch NYC, where she referred to misdemeanor theft as 'crimes of poverty' and criticized the prioritization of large corporations over struggling individuals. The NYPD reported a 16.3% decline in retail theft citywide during the first half of 2026 compared to the previous year. Aronberg warned that Gallagher's comments could politically harm the Democratic Party by allowing Republicans to frame them as indifferent to crime.
