Michigan Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens endorsed Republican Mike Rogers in the Michigan Senate race on Sunday after Abdul El-Sayed defeated her in the Democratic primary. Speaking outside Northend Church of God in Christ in Detroit, El-Sayed called her endorsement a distraction and said his focus remained on the race against Rogers.

El-Sayed said Michigan’s 10 million residents deserved better government and that he was focused on nearly all of them rather than Stevens. Rogers separately said his campaign’s models showed him ahead by nearly 7 percentage points among voters who had returned ballots, The Hill reported. The outlet said recent polls favored El-Sayed. Al Jazeera reported that Rogers also mocked El-Sayed with a sarcastic gift basket.
