The Justice Department has revised internal guidance to allow Attorney General Todd Blanche and other Senate-confirmed presidential appointees to take part in political activities, including speaking at political gatherings and backing or opposing candidates, PBS News reported.

The memo, obtained by PBS News and written by the department's top ethics official, says those appointees are exempt from stricter limits that apply to most senior officials. PBS reported that the policy departs from prior Justice Department practice.

Separately, Blanche dismissed criticism over mixing official duties and electoral politics after a Justice Department event in South Carolina with Sen. Darline Graham, R-S.C., the Washington Examiner reported. Blanche told reporters Thursday, “This is not my first trip here.”
