The U.S. Coast Guard rescued at least 40 people after a boat capsized west of Puerto Rico, authorities said Monday. Two people were found dead, according to reports citing the Coast Guard, while The New York Times reported that at least three people died. Search efforts were continuing Monday evening.
Survivors told the Coast Guard that about 60 people had been aboard the makeshift vessel. The boat capsized late Sunday near Mona Island after a fight in which people were injured by a machete, the Coast Guard said; people then entered the water without life vests. A passing boat spotted survivors around noon Monday after they had spent more than 12 hours in the water and alerted authorities. It was not immediately clear where the passengers were from.
