Brazilian presidential candidates Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Bolsonaro were preparing for a runoff vote, with Al Jazeera reporting that they debated policy proposals before Sunday’s voting. The outlet said polls showed the candidates running closely ahead of the election.
Fox News reported that about 125 million Brazilians voted on Oct. 4 using voting machines without paper ballots and that a runoff was known less than four hours after polls closed. Its account differed from Al Jazeera’s on the candidate named Bolsonaro, identifying conservative challenger Flavio Bolsonaro while describing Lula as president. Fox said the voting system has operated for more than three decades, is disconnected from the internet and is audited. Al Jazeera did not provide further details on the debate or runoff process.
