California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a law Tuesday barring local, state and federal law enforcement officers in the state from using gloves that can deliver electric shocks. The ban takes effect next year and remains in force through 2030.
The action followed Immigration and Customs Enforcement's move to obtain the gloves, which are intended to gain compliance from combative people. Reports said ICE awarded a contract last month worth nearly $17 million for 6,000 pairs; Mother Jones put the amount at $16.7 million. Newsom said California was acting to strengthen protections for families.
