Indian authorities closed Central Park in New Delhi and deployed thousands of additional police officers on Friday as the Cockroach Janta Party called supporters to gather there at 5 p.m. for a protest, reports said. Authorities cited administrative reasons for closing the park, according to Al Jazeera.
The youth-led CJP has held protests seeking the resignation of India’s election chief. The latest rally was called after two activists were jailed for five days this week over allegations that they trespassed at a protest site, Al Jazeera reported. Deutsche Welle said the gathering was planned in Connaught Place, about 600 meters from Jantar Mantar, with participants asked to wave the Indian flag. A CJP appeal named Ashutosh and Saurav among those it said supporters should back.
