David Ellison is negotiating to keep CNN chief executive Mark Thompson in place without oversight from CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss when the networks’ parent companies merge, The New York Times reported.

The New York Post reported that Paramount Skydance is preparing to complete its merger with Warner Bros. Discovery next week and that Ellison is considering changes to Weiss’ position. Sources told the Post her duties could be narrowed toward editorial work rather than corporate management, including hiring and firing senior talent. The Post also reported that Weiss could contribute editorially to CNN.

Ellison said Friday that the combined company would be called Skydance, according to the Post. The Times reported that the arrangement involving Thompson and Weiss was still being negotiated.
