The Department of Homeland Security said more than 100,000 Ukrainians and Sudanese in the United States will remain protected from deportation for now, after their temporary protected status had been due to expire Monday.

The affected groups include about 101,000 Ukrainians and 1,800 Sudanese, according to the reports. DHS said they “retain protections” while it delays a decision on their status, adding that an announcement “will be made at the appropriate time.”

The decision leaves the protections in place temporarily rather than setting out a new end date. PBS reported that activists and lawmakers have said Ukrainians cannot safely return amid the war with Russia. The New York Times said the move follows a similar decision last month involving people from El Salvador.
