The Justice Department has sent letters to about 20 Democrats, including election lawyer Marc Elias, concerning an investigation into an effort to place another Dan Sullivan on Alaska’s ballot, according to reports published Tuesday. Recipients were told they could be targets of the inquiry or were asked to preserve records.
The investigation concerns an Alaska man who shares the name of Republican senator Daniel Sullivan. The Guardian reported that the notices went to a leading Democratic election lawyer and other Democrats. The Washington Examiner said at least one official with the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee was among those expected to receive notices. Prosecutors are examining allegations that the candidacy was intended to draw votes from Sullivan.
