Duane "Keffe D" Davis was sentenced Tuesday in Las Vegas to 40 years to life in prison for orchestrating the 1996 killing of rapper Tupac Shakur. Davis, 63, was convicted of first-degree murder with use of a deadly weapon after prosecutors said he led the group responsible for the drive-by shooting.

Judge Carli Kierny said Davis could not take Shakur’s life and “just walk away from it.” Prosecutors said Davis did not fire the gun but played a leading role, and BBC reported that he acknowledged providing the weapon in his memoir. Reports differ on when the jury returned its verdict, with some saying August and the BBC saying September. BBC also reported that Davis plans to appeal.
