Federal authorities arrested Department of Energy employee Ashton Hamed Ellaboudy, 51, on Thursday in Washington state, accusing him of attempting to provide material support or resources to the Houthis, the Justice Department said.

Ellaboudy, a Richland, Washington, resident, is accused of acquiring materials for homemade explosives and drones and seeking to improve the group’s communications capabilities, according to the Justice Department and FBI. The Justice Department said he traveled overseas and used specialized expertise in an alleged effort to aid the Houthis; the FBI said he traveled to Yemen last September.

Ellaboudy was scheduled to make an initial appearance before a federal magistrate judge in Richland at 11 a.m. Friday. Court records did not list an attorney available to comment, the New York Post reported.
