The Federal Election Commission’s electronic campaign-finance filing system was offline Tuesday, preventing political committees and candidates from submitting certain reports as the agency investigated the disruption.

The FEC said the problem began late Monday evening and posted before 3 p.m. Tuesday that it was continuing its investigation. An email reviewed by The Washington Sun said electronic reports could not be submitted. The Hill reported that an FEC spokesperson said agency IT teams were working to restore service. The Washington Examiner said the outage affected 24- and 48-hour finance reports. Reuters reported that hackers had targeted the site, according to the Sun, but the Sun said it had not independently confirmed that account.
