A child in Lewis County, New York, died of measles, Gov. Kathy Hochul said Monday, marking the state’s first measles-related death in 30 years amid an outbreak.
Hochul said she was heartbroken by the death and offered condolences to the child’s family and others who knew the child. The child’s age was not disclosed. The Washington Examiner reported that New York has recorded 178 measles cases this year. Four weeks before the death was reported, Hochul declared a state disaster emergency in response to rising case numbers, the New York Post reported. Hochul said vaccination remains the best protection against measles.
