Hurricane Isaias made landfall late Friday on Florida’s Panhandle as a Category 2 storm and weakened into a post-tropical cyclone Saturday, leaving deaths and widespread power outages across the Southeast.
The BBC and Al Jazeera reported four deaths, while NPR and the Daily Wire reported at least two. The BBC said Alabama and Florida each reported two deaths, including people killed when trees fell on their homes. Al Jazeera reported more than 650,000 customers without power; the BBC, citing PowerOutage, put the total at about 500,000 Saturday evening. Reports described downed trees, damaged homes and intense winds.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis deployed state crews Saturday to clear major highways and bridges and restore electricity, Fox News reported. Alabama, Florida and Georgia had declared emergencies before the storm arrived, according to the BBC.
