Hurricane Simon, a Category 4 storm, moved near Mexico’s Pacific coast Sunday, threatening Puerto Vallarta and other areas with powerful winds, heavy rain, flooding and mudslides.
PBS reported the hurricane’s center was tracking parallel to the coast and could bring its strongest weather to Puerto Vallarta around midnight through Monday morning. The U.S. National Hurricane Center said it was unclear whether Simon would make landfall; PBS reported sustained winds of 140 mph (220 kph), while Al Jazeera reported winds up to 150 mph (241 kph).
Al Jazeera said the storm had been about 115 miles (185 km) south-southwest of Manzanillo and could bring 10 to 20 inches (25 to 51 cm) of rain in southwestern Mexico. Businesses in Puerto Vallarta boarded windows as the storm approached.
