A Texas grand jury on Friday indicted Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer Mario Alberto Morales on a second-degree aggravated assault charge after he allegedly struck a man with an SUV in Houston on Oct. 10, prosecutors said.
Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare said the charge alleges aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a motor vehicle. Authorities identified the man as Miguel Parra Hernandez, 48, who the district attorney's office said was running away when an unmarked black vehicle driven by Morales hit him. The Guardian reported that Hernandez suffered multiple leg fractures and a hip injury.
The charge carries a potential sentence of two to 20 years if Morales is convicted, Teare said. Al Jazeera reported that the incident occurred during an immigration raid and involved a construction worker.
