A federal judge on Monday dismissed criminal charges against former FBI officials Nikki Floris and Bradley Benavides, who had been accused of making false statements to Congress about the FBI's Hunter Biden investigation.

Magistrate Judge Zia Faruqui said prosecutors had not established probable cause that either official knowingly made false statements, according to the Guardian. NPR reported that Faruqui said he was "deeply troubled" by mistakes and the speed with which the case was handled, while its headline said he accused the Justice Department of weaponization. The testimony concerned the bureau's role in investigating Biden's laptop.

PBS reported that the Justice Department could still seek an indictment from a grand jury.
