Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms was projected to defeat Republican businessman Rick Jackson in Georgia’s governor’s race, according to Fox News, while Al Jazeera reported that she had been elected governor-elect.
Fox News said Bottoms, a former Atlanta mayor, would become Georgia’s first female governor and the first Black woman elected governor in U.S. history. Al Jazeera described her as Georgia’s first Black governor.
The result would put a Democrat in the governor’s mansion for the first time since Roy Barnes won in 1998, Fox News reported. Republicans have held the office since 2002, according to the outlet.
