The New York Knicks organization sent employees an email in late September offering championship rings as part of a phishing test, according to reports. Employees who used the link were required to take a cybersecurity class, The New York Times reported, as cited by Ars Technica.
The message told employees their Employee Championship Ring was available and directed them to select between two designs. The Athletic, as cited by Fox News, said those who clicked could not choose a ring and instead had to attend the class amid owner James Dolan’s cybersecurity concerns. Fox News reported that MSG called the use of the ring offer an unfortunate mistake.
The New York Post reported that the organization has a $3.7 million plan to distribute 275 championship rings. A league source told the Post that assistant coaches would receive actual rings shortly and that the distribution had always been planned.
