Pennsylvania reported 1,004 confirmed measles cases on Monday, surpassing 1,000 infections this year as New York declared a statewide disaster emergency over its own increase in cases.
The Pennsylvania Department of Health said the cases were reported in 39 counties and included 198 hospitalizations and five measles-associated deaths. The latest total was 27 higher than the Oct. 2 count, according to Erie News Now. State officials said four confirmed cases, or less than 1%, involved vaccinated people. The CDC reported 3,869 cases nationwide this year, Deutsche Welle said.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul said the state had recorded 108 cases as of Oct. 3, including seven in New York City. Her declaration, which expands some health professionals’ ability to administer MMR vaccines, remains in effect through Nov. 4. Pennsylvania health officials said the outbreak began west of Philadelphia in April.
