Mississippi’s Senate election between Republican incumbent Cindy Hyde-Smith and Democrat Scott Colom remained unresolved as of Wednesday afternoon, with Colom ahead while more than 95% of ballots had been counted, according to Mother Jones.
Mother Jones reported the margin was fewer than 100 votes. Fox News, citing a fundraising email from Gavin Newsom’s campaign, said Colom led by a couple hundred votes. The email said the contest was entering ballot-curing procedures and possible legal disputes. Marc Elias said his firm was leading a legal effort aimed at ensuring a Colom victory. The New York Times reported that Mississippi has no legal provision for recounts in statewide elections. Al Jazeera said the race remained on a knife’s edge. Colom could become the state’s first Black senator since Reconstruction, according to Mother Jones.
