Florida carried out its 19th execution of the year Thursday, while Indiana executed a man earlier in the day and Alabama had another lethal injection scheduled. Jesse Guardado was pronounced dead at 6:13 p.m. after a three-drug injection at a state prison in Starke, according to Florida’s governor’s office.
Guardado had pleaded guilty to fatally stabbing a 75-year-old woman in her Walton County home in 2004 and taking valuables, including $80, reports said. Indiana executed a man who admitted killing two children in a house fire, the New York Post reported. Fox News said Alabama’s planned execution would be its third this year and Indiana’s first. It also reported that three states had carried out executions on the same day previously this year, on Aug. 13.
