More than 1,000 people were arrested after disorder in cities across France on Saturday, as more than half a million people joined demonstrations over living costs, the BBC reported.
The protests drew students, trade unionists and Yellow Vest activists protesting high prices and inequality, Deutsche Welle reported. The New York Post put the turnout at 550,000 and said demonstrators also protested education costs. The BBC reported clashes, looting and buildings on fire, while the New York Times said many rallies remained peaceful despite unrest.
In Limoges, local prefect Maurice Barate told AFP that a fire had badly damaged the town hall; Fox News reported his description of the damage. Emmanuel Macron said violent participants would be prosecuted and punished, according to the Washington Examiner.
