Rep. Andy Harris threatened to refer a student reporter for prosecution over recording him after a candidate forum Tuesday night in Cambridge, Maryland, according to NBC Washington and WBAL-TV. The forum included Harris and Democratic challenger Dan Schwartz, WBAL-TV reported.

Video cited by NBC Washington showed Harris telling a University of Maryland student reporter, “You do not have my permission to record! If you record, we will refer you to the prosecutor.” The reporter responded that others in the room were recording; Harris said Maryland was a two-party state. WBAL-TV reported that Harris also threatened to have the reporter removed from a news conference. In an interview with Fox45 cited by the Washington Examiner, Harris defended his response, saying he had pushed back against what he described as liberal media badgering a conservative politician.
