A 16-year-old gunman killed three children and a teacher at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday before a community member shot and killed him, police said.

Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said the children who died were 5, 8 and 11 years old. A 7-year-old and a 54-year-old teacher were hospitalized in critical condition. Police said the gunman entered the school after firing at locked doors, and that the community member pursued him inside and engaged him. The suspect was already dead when officers arrived, according to police.

The suspect was not named. Authorities had not determined whether he had any connection to the school, the BBC reported. The school was evacuated as police went room by room, according to Al Jazeera.
