The Supreme Court on Monday denied the Trump administration’s emergency request to require California officials to segregate and not count about 20,000 mail ballots that the Justice Department says may have been cast by noncitizens. The court’s unsigned, one-sentence order gave no explanation and noted no dissents.
Justice Elena Kagan referred the application to the full court, which acted hours after it was filed, Democracy Docket reported. The request came after two lower courts rejected the administration’s effort to require the ballots be separated for citizenship verification. California and immigration rights groups have questioned the accuracy of the administration’s list, according to The Hill.
