The United States is deploying the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group and the USS Makin Island amphibious force toward the Middle East, adding to its military presence around Iran, according to U.S. officials and multiple reports.
Al Jazeera, citing a U.S. official, reported that the Theodore Roosevelt left San Diego on Sunday and the Makin Island force followed a day later. The official said three aircraft carriers and two amphibious landing groups would be positioned around Iran by the end of November. The Hill reported that more than 4,000 Marines and sailors aboard three warships were being sent, while Al Jazeera said the Makin Island force carried more than 2,000 Marines.
The Al Jazeera official said the deployment would give President Donald Trump additional military options. The Washington Examiner reported that Trump said it was “possible” offensive attacks against Iran could resume after the midterm elections.
