South Korean President Lee Jae Myung on Friday demanded a public apology from Ukraine over President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s disclosure that two North Korean prisoners of war had been transferred to South Korea, warning of unspecified further action if Kyiv does not apologise.

Zelenskyy revealed the transfer while addressing the UN General Assembly last week. The two North Korean soldiers had been captured while fighting for Russia, according to the reports. Seoul said the transfer had been intended to remain secret, partly to protect the prisoners’ families, and that Ukraine had requested confidentiality.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha on Thursday called the dispute a diplomatic misunderstanding and said Kyiv was working to resolve it. Lee rejected that description, saying the issue concerned the dignity of the Korean people and nation.
